November 8, 2010

I hope everyone had a good week. As you can imagine, we had some challenges last week dealing with the sudden loss of a member of our community. We are all saddened for the Egozi family. I can tell you that if you work in schools long enough, these types of things are inevitable. However, they do not get any easier. It is times like these that the strength of a community becomes very evident. I left school just as our community was becoming more aware of the situation. Upon my return, the first message on my voicemail was from a parent asking how her family could help. I imagine that she is not the only person in our school wondering the same thing. On Tuesday, prior to leaving for community service, we are going to address this with the 7th graders as a group. The message to them is that Tikkun Olam is more than just providing service to outside organizations it includes helping those in our community in a time of need. However, it is also going to be a practical discussion on how they can try to serve the best needs of their classmates.

In the coming weeks, we will all inevitably look for ways to help while still being cognizant of the family’s need for privacy. One of the many reasons why this school is a great place is because one of its fundamental principles is its belief in the community. We talk a lot at school about what it means to be a part of our community and the responsibilities that come with being a member of it. However, at each step we remind them that there are benefits that come with being in this community and that it will be there for them, should they need it. This may be one of those times.

Thanks being who you are. Thanks for asking the right questions. We will be sure to get information to you as is appropriate and that is consistent with the wishes of the family. You all have a good week.
